Wiper Blades 101

Have you ever turned on your wiper blades while it was raining and discovered your wipers were producing more smudges and smears than clear areas on your windshield? This has likely happened to most of us. Here are a few tips on upkeep, maintenance and replacement for your wiper blades.

Wiper Blades 101 Review
  • Check your windshield for streaks or hazing during rain or snow
  • Look to see if your wiper blades are swiping unsmoothly or skipping
  • Inspect your wiper blades for split or detached rubber
  • Check the wiper blades for round or worn rubber edges
  • Inspect the wiper blades for bent or cracked metal arms
Be sure to check your wiper blades before the next rain or snow fall. If your blades need replacing, check your owners manual or the car manufacturer specifications for proper size and the proper type of wiper blade replacement to use for your vehicle.

How to Change a Tire

At some point, most of us will experience having to deal with a flat tire. When this happens we can either call a toe truck, road side assistance, a friend or family member to help. Another option is handling the problem our self. Typically the least time consuming and least inexpensive option is handling the problem our self. Here is a video that will help those of us who never had to change a tire on our own to do so. Let's take a look.

Always thinks safety first when performing any maintenance or repairs on your vehicle.
  • Be sure you are clear of traffic.
  • Se that conditions are suitable for you to perform the work.
  • Have the right tools to do the job.
Having the right tools will save you from a lot of head ache as well as ensure you get the work done safely and properly.

What is a budget

Do you have a house hold budget? If not, you should seriously consider creating a budget for your household to help with managing your income and ensure your money is working for you.  And most financial experts say, no matter how much you make, you should have a budget. One of the main benefits of having a budget is that it allows you to account for all of you income and how you use it. For example, if you do not keep a house hold budget, do you know how much you send buying coffee on the way to work every morning or buying lunch every day at work? Let's say you buy a $4.25 cup of Joe every morning, 5 days a week. That is $21.25. Doing that for 4 weeks means you spend $85 a month on coffee. Do that for 12 months and you spend $1020 on coffee. Could you stand to put that $1020 to better use? A budget would help you do just that.

Many financial professionals recommend that you break down your budget into several categories that include savings, spending, investment and donations. Doing this helps you put your money in separate functional bucks. Below is a sample budget base on an income of $2200 a month for a single individual with no children.

Everyone's circumstances will be different and won't be able to perfectly fit into this model. Making adjustments to allotment amounts and making decisions about your financial priorities will help you identify how to give purpose to your income. There are a lot of free personal finance resources you can access to help you with managing the budget for your house hold. A good place to start is your bank or credit union. Many banks and credit unions offer free tools and learning resources to help you with managing your money.

Happy Budgeting!

Avoid using credit like it is income.

A Credit Card mistakes to avoid!

Avoid using credit like it is income.
Here is something to consider. If you can't payoff the item you are thinking about purchasing with your credit card at the end of the month, that probably means you cannot afford it. This reality can be a hard pill to swallow. After all, what good does it make to have a credit card, right? Credit cards allow us to have instant gratification. We can get what we want right now, without having to come up with the actual cash for it. We can figure out how we pay for it later. Unfortunately, we go from figuring out how to pay for it, to just making the minimum payment on our credit card. And as we make more and more buying decisions like this, that minimum payment amount gets higher and higher. Before you know it your minimum payment is over a hundred dollars each month and your credit card balance is way more than you ever intended for it to be.

If you don't pay off your credit card at the end of the month, finance charges begin to accrue. This accrual can carry over every month if the balance isn't paid off. Many people find themselves paying hundreds or even thousand of dollars more than the item's cost in related finance charges. Build the habit and mindset to not make credit card purchases you can't pay off by the end of the month. Instead, figure out how much you need to save each pay period so you can buy the item out right. Making the sacrifice of time can go a long way to to building your appreciation of the value of a dollar. You will even appreciate the item you purchased more and be proud of the fact that you bought it with cash instead of using credit.

Have a plan for maintenance and repairs

Maintenance and repair cost often catch people off guard. This doesn't always have to be the case. with a little planning we can be prepared for most maintenance expenses. And by following the manufacturer's suggested maintenance schedule you can help minimize the frequency and expense of unexpected repairs. When you are caught off guard, maintenance and unexpected repairs cost can break your wallet and the bank. In a study, it was identified that 60% of Americans cannot handle a $1000 emergency without having to borrow money. A number of things can go wrong with your vehicle that would cause the repair bill to soar to $1000 or more.

To avoid being caught financially unprepared, set aside money in your household budget for vehicle maintenance and repairs. You can estimate how often you will need to do certain maintenance work like oil changes, tire rotations, tire balancing, replacing the oil filter, replacing the windshield wipers and so on. You can also refer to your owners manual to learn the mileage intervals that are suggested for certain maintenance work to be completed. Those resources can help you determine how much you will need to set aside each pay period so you will be financially prepared when the time for maintenance work on your vehicle arrives.

Once you determine how much you will need to cover maintenance expenses, add a little more to that amount to set aside funds for unexpected repairs. Over time, that money will add up. When the inevitable time comes for an unexpected vehicle repair, you will have money set aside to help cover it.

Being financially prepared will prevent an unexpected situation from becoming a financial emergency. Being prepared during these moments allows you to have peace of mind through the situation. It also prevents you from making a series of bad financial decisions that could take you months or even years to recover from.

Understanding Buy Here Pay Here Financing

Car buyers have several options to choose from when seeking out financing options for car loans. Banks, Credit Unions, Manufacturer Credit, are some of the most popular options. In house financing also known as buy here pay here financing is also an options buyers can exercise when seeking to purchase a vehicle.

The Buy Here Pay Here Advantage
Buy here pay financing allows the borrower to purchase their vehicle and make payments at the same location. The borrower gets to build a relationship with the dealer.

Overcome Credit Hurdles
In house financing is also useful for buyers who have credit opportunities. Buyers with no credit or bad credit may get turned down by primary lenders. They may even find difficulty in getting approved by secondary lenders. Buy here pay here lenders usually look at more than a buyer's credit score. Things like income, time on the job and time at their residency can play a big role in getting approved. Looking at other qualifiers helps borrowers qualify for an auto loan, even when other institutions have said no.

Setup for Success
Buy here pay here dealers often work with their customers to ensure their car purchase fits in their budget. It is important to ensure a buyer doesn't get in over their head by purchasing too much car. Understanding the range of affordability goes a long way to setting up a customer to be successful with buying a car and meeting their payment obligations.

Is Your Car Winter Ready

Winter conditions can change how our cars perform. From tires to batteries, cold weather can take your car from working to parked. Here are some tips to help ensure you and your vehicle are prepared for the cold of winter.

Keep the battery, battery cables and battery connectors in good shape
It never fails. For a lot of people, the first cold night of the year will produce a car that won't start. When temperatures drop, it takes more amps from the battery to get your car to crank up. Bad battery cables, corroded battery connections and dead battery cells compounded with cold temperatures can lead to a battery being too depleted to start your car. Inspect your battery, the battery cable and battery connections before the weather turns cold. If you don't, needing a set of jumper cables may soon be in your future.

Replace wiper blades
Personally, I hate nothing more than turning on the wind shield wiper and seeing the wiper blades move back a forth while patchy areas on the wind shield get missed by the wiper blades. Add in a little sleet or ice with the rain and now visibility is really impacted. When you notice your wiper blade is missing certain areas of your windshield be sure to check your blade. Sometime derby can prevent the wiper blade from wiping some surface areas of the windshield. A torn wiper blade will also cause the wiper to miss some surface areas on your windshield. A quick inspection of your wiper blades will help you identify if and when it is time for replacement.

Check your oil
Cold weather can impact your engine performance. When oil is cold it is thicker. Thicker oil causes your engine to work harder. Refer to your owner's manual to see the manufacture's maintenance schedule for your vehicle. Ensure you adhere to the schedule for changing oil in your vehicle.

Inspect your tires
Cold air contracts. When its cold out outside, the air in your tires is cold too. This is why many of us experience having our tire pressure sensor light come on after the first cold night of the season. Maintaining proper tire pressure is importance to maximize traction in rainy, icy and snowy conditions.

Bonus winter tip: Clear frost, ice or snow from your windshield before you start driving.
Driving your vehicle before the windshield has completely defrosted, can cause any moisture remaining on your windshield to refreeze. Driving your vehicle before the windshield has completely defrosted will impact your visibility and cause an unnecessary distraction while you are driving. You also run the risk of getting a ticket if you are observed operating your vehicle while the windshield is obstructed.
